Television: The Changing Times

When television was first invented there might have been some who believed it was the bringer of changing times while some viewed it as an enemy to be vanquished. Television by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki is a take on the latter category. But in his version television is not the enemy per say but it is symbolic of the true enemy that is the changing times…. Time and Tide waits for no man, yet that doesn’t stop us from trying to delay it. The film focuses on the hilarious attempts of its characters to do the same.

In the film opening you see a character pasting over images in a newspaper with white paper. This scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie that shows the extraordinary length to which people go to delay the inevitable. The concept of the movie is fairly simple. A village head that sees television as the ultimate evil, village people that follow his every instruction, a school teacher that upsets the equilibrium by bringing a TV into their midst and temptations that lure the people to defy their elders. While the elders try to stop change, change is inevitable which the protagonist learns towards the end. Television delivers a quite entertaining journey thanks to a very solid story-telling and brilliant performance by actors. There are some moments in the movie that will stay with you even after you leave the theaters. But in the end Television is a movie that delivers a very strong message. It shows that no matter the vices there is virtue in every creation and it will not do to forsake the thing without considering this aspect.  An extraordinary film that should not be missed.
