Being a fan of movies like
Inception, Prestige, Shutter Island and Fight Club movies that come under the
genre of psychological thriller it came as no surprise to me that I thoroughly
enjoyed LUCIA. The first public funded movie in Kannada Lucia is one of those
rare gems that shows that Indian Cinema in not behind in the mind bender movie
category.
After watching this movie I told to one of my friends that it was one
of the best psychological thriller movies that I have seen in a while.
Immediately my friend responded by saying that it must be a rip off from some
Hollywood movie. Though I was angered at her response I couldn’t really blame
her, as when it comes to mind bender that was the usual experience. However
LUCIA far from being a rip off can even be termed as India’s answer to
Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION. The movie starts off with a detective trying to
determine whether a case assigned to him is a murder or a suicide, which
quickly leads to the discovery of "Lucia" and sets the tone for the
rest of the movie. Photo Courtesy http://i1.cdnds.net |
Once Lucia enters the picture the narration is gripping. Director
Pawan kumar manages to engage the audience in a brilliant fashion. Some part of
the movie is in Black and White and some is in Color, the B&W world of
Nikki tells the story of a Successful actor and Color world of a Lowly
"Torch Shiner" .From here on the viewer is constantly trying to piece
together the two lives of Nikki which, as the movie progresses ,becomes more
intense and absorbing. The film never drags and keeps moving at a constant pace
with compelling references of lucid dreams and hallucination till the revealing
climax. The acting is top class especially the male lead. Satish Neenasam has
done his best to make characters of Nikhil, the dream version and the real one
two distinct personalities. The change in body language itself makes you wonder
whether the two are really played by the same character. A master stroke by
Pawan Kumar who as raised the bar for Indian thriller movies.
